Our Italian Adventure Captured in a Quilt

          We just got back from a beautiful trip through the Tuscan region of Italy. Everything was more fabulous than I ever imagined it would be. We traveled with another couple and did it all on our own. No guided tours... we just followed my husband and hoped he knew what he was doing, as he hadn't been to Italy in 43 years!

I'm needing to make a quilt for our bed as a remembrance of the trip. I've got it nearly worked out in my head and just need to do some sketches, review pictures, buy fabric,..... it is all just so overwhelming! I know I want the main part of the quilt to be a depiction of the different marble floors we saw in the Duomos. I took lots of pictures of church floors!

 These first two pictures are from areas of the Vatican Museum. I think I was the only one looking down...

Here you see the floors of San Marco in Venice. As I was taking the pictures water was creeping in to flood parts of the church during high tide. Just amazing. Are these not examples of patch work quilts???







These floors were just spellbinding. I just wanted to stand and study them. So many different patterns and colors. I'm thinking I can capture the look using  the Stonehenge Marbles fabric by Northcott.


This beautiful floor is actually outside, at ground level as the border around the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was raining that day and the colors just popped!





This is part of the Parthenon floor. Just so beautiful.

I think I need to do different, irregular sections to the center part of the quilt. However, what I'm visualizing for the parts that will cover the sides of the bed is more in the line of an art quilt. I want to do Tuscan countryside, vineyards, olive trees... Well, that's another blog entry altogether. For now I'm going to tackle the Duomo Floors!

 I don't have my beautiful sewing studio anymore. We decided to get out from under the mortgage. That means we sold the house including my awesome sewing room above the garage! Bummer! But we're going to Italy in the Fall for a month.... not a bade trade off at all. Italy always inspires new quilts. So we got creative with space. This house is 1400 sq' compared to the 2800' we sold. There are two bedrooms. That's it! The "guest bedroom" is my new sewing room. DH converted the closet into a lighted sewing center with my thread racks on the back closet wall. Not too bad. From now on I'll make smaller art quilts :-)  But, what to do about a bed in the center of the room???? DH to the rescue again. He built a Murphy Bed from a kit and directions off the web. A Ghastly Party... It's BYOB!

There's room for a cheese board, knife, and bread, Oh what a marvelous, delicious spread! Check out the pockets for napkins and corkscrew. How about the backside? It's cute and chic, too. April Showers Mug Rug Blog Hop

Welcome! So happy you could stop by to visit on this beautiful spring day. Erin Davis  and Madamme Samm  have done a fabulous job of scheduling and coordinating this event...  To them I send ~   A Grand Thank You! My mug rug is a bit on the large size and does not have a thing to do with rain, showers or April. In fact, I should have saved it for next month's bird blog hop. But it is the one and only mug rug I've ever made, and I just love it.  (Oddly enough, so does my DH) It all started with this litte table located in our cozy reading corner of the kitchen.    It's functional because it holds magazines and has a lamp.  However, the top is not real wood! Tacky!  And, our kitchen is pretty nice... We love its open style and views.  Enjoying coffee there in the morning is quite nice. I wanted a nicer looking table.
